Public Housing at Linden Housing Authority

Public housing exists to ensure that eligible low-income individuals and families have access to safe, clean, and affordable housing. At the Linden Housing Authority (LHA), we provide quality housing opportunities to residents in need — including families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities — right here in the City of Linden.

What is Public Housing?

Public housing includes rental properties that are owned and operated by LHA and subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Our portfolio consists of a mix of units ranging from single-family homes to apartment buildings.

Public housing tenants typically pay 30% of their adjusted gross income toward rent, and the remainder is covered by HUD subsidy.

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility is based on several factors, including:

  • Income Limits – You must fall within HUD-defined low-income categories for Union County, NJ.
  • Citizenship or Eligible Immigration Status
  • Household Composition – Families, single individuals, seniors (62+), and persons with qualifying disabilities may apply.
  • Background Screening – We review rental history, criminal background, and other risk factors to determine eligibility./li>

Note: Meeting eligibility criteria does not guarantee immediate housing. Units are assigned based on waiting list position and availability.
